my holygrail fashion show
When I was in my first year of college, after I realized you have to take Gen Ed classes before you can take courses specific for your major. I made a promise to myself that I would teach myself about fashion until it was time to take those courses. I started doing “FashionFaxz” on my Instagram stories to share all of the random facts I was teaching myself and at the time we were entering the “Black Lives Matter” era and I felt that it was more important to highlight Black Designers and Black Fashion Icons. That introduced me to so many designers I wasn’t privy to before and it honestly became a habit.
During my search, I discovered the label Pyer Moss.
Pyer Moss was founded in 2013 by Kerby Jean Raymond. It first came into the spotlight in 2016 for the Pyer Moss Spring 16’ Menswear Collection during New York Fashion Week. The show highlighted police brutality, referencing the Black Lives Matter movement through videos, street art, and fashion. In 2020 Kerby was named the Global Creative Director of Reebok sportswear brand and in the same month, Pyer Moss was awarded the top prize at the 50th CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund.
The Spring Summer 2020 fashion show changed my life. I had already fallen in love with fashion and designing clothes but after watching the show I fell in love with being a Designer.
The fashion production of that show was amazing. The show is set in the King’s Theatre in Brooklyn, New York. The King’s Theatre is a historic performing arts venue that reopened in 2015. The show was one of the most anticipated of the season. The show was a musical experience that paid homage to rock n’ roll. The collection named “Sister” focused on the contribution of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a queer Black singer, songwriter, guitarist, and recording artist. It started with an opening poem/prayer, there were live instruments and a live choir that sang Lil Kim. I was absolutely obsessed and honestly still am, sometimes I go back to watch it if I need to cheer myself up or get inspired.
Watching that show for the first time opened my eyes to a lot. All of what goes into fashion show production, the stage, the lighting, the music choice, the feeling, and the art of it all together. When I debut my fashion line during Paris Fashion Week in some years best believe this show inspired most of it.
